^ This. Also, I am literally in the exact same boat right now and it is beyond stressful. I have a huge project starting in early January and my current rig is starting to act super weird, so I am also trying to figure out the best way to snag a flagship without getting fleeced. Ngl, trying to balance a tight budget with the need for reliable hardware right before a deadline is the absolute worst. Just to get a better idea of what might work for you... what kind of software are you actually running for that video contract? Like, are you doing heavy 3D rendering or is it mostly just editing and color grading? Also, do you rely on any specific plugins that only work well on one brand, or are you pretty much open to whatever gives you the best bang for your buck?

Re: "dude you gotta look at the open-box sections!..." - i totally agree with that strategy but honestly, with a big contract on the line, you need something that definitely works right out of the box. i've been building workstations for over a decade and the stress of a dead-on-arrival used card right before a major deadline is a total nightmare. if you're dead set on that $1850 cap, keep a close watch on the MSI Gaming X Trio GeForce RTX 6080 Ti 20GB instead of just hunting the 6090. in my experience, the performance gap for most video rendering suites isn't always worth the massive price jump if it puts you in the red. i've tried many different setups and for reliability, i'd look at the PNY GeForce RTX 6090 Verto 32GB too since they tend to stay closer to msrp than the flashy oc models. few resources that might help:

set up a distill.io monitor on the product pages

use the buildapcsales discord for instant pings

check the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 6080 Ti Gaming OC 20GB at smaller vendors like adorama driving 3 hours to micro center is a gamble i wouldnt take unless their site shows serious stock that morning. sticking to online drops with auto-fill browser extensions is usually the way to go these days tho...

dude you gotta look at the open-box sections! seriously i have scored amazing deals that way. if youre worried about that $1850 cap which is super tight for a brand new flagship definitely keep an eye on the ZOTAC Gaming GeForce RTX 6080 Ti 20GB or even look for a returned NVIDIA GeForce RTX 6090 Founders Edition 32GB at a local shop. most people forget about the smaller retailers too! everyone swarms the big sites but places like adorama or even some smaller regional tech shops can have fantastic flash sales without the crazy bot competition. if you really want that flagship power for your video contract maybe grab a slightly lower tier and just push it hard? itll save you hundreds and honestly the performance gap usually isnt worth the extra $500. plus you wont have to deal with those insane lines lol. just stay glued to those refresh buttons starting the monday before black friday... things go fast but its totally doable!

Those rumors about massive price cuts always end up being a disappointment. Online drops are just bot wars now, and Micro Center stock is rarely worth the long drive. I wouldnt risk it. You're better off hunting a ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 8900 XTX 24GB on sale instead.
