im already trying to map out my next big upgrade and im really eyeing black friday 2026 as the sweet spot to pull the trigger. i did some digging on some hardware forums and saw people talking about how amd zen 6 might be out by then which usually means the zen 5 stuff like the 9800x3d or the 9950x will finally see some massive price cuts. but then i saw another rumor saying intel nova lake is going to be the big disruptor and they might slash prices to get people back on their platform. it makes it hard to know which way to lean since the rumors are kinda conflicting right now.

im trying to be smart about my money since i only upgrade every 5-6 years and my current i7 is basically on life support at this point. here is what im hoping for:

  • budget around 400 or 500 bucks for the cpu
  • must handle heavy 4k video editing without stuttering
  • i want a socket that isnt going to be dead in a year
  • i live in ohio so i can drive to micro center for those in-store only bundles

with how fast things move do you think the high end 16 core chips will actually hit that 350-400 range by late 2026 or am i dreaming? just trying to figure out how much to set aside...

I love planning these deep-dive upgrades so far out! Honestly its the best way to avoid buyers remorse. If the timeline holds and Zen 6 drops mid-2026 then the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X 16-core 32-thread 5.7GHz is going to be the absolute king of value for your 4k editing needs. I've seen this cycle happen over and over and its amazing how much raw power you can grab for under 400 bucks once the next shiny thing hits the shelves. You definitely arent dreaming about those 16-core prices... basically every flagship chip follows that same downward curve once the replacement is announced. For a heavy video editing workflow you might also want to look into the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K 24-core 5.7GHz if Intel finally gets their act together with socket longevity. They usually offer fantastic quicksync support which is a lifesaver for scrubbing through timelines but if the socket is a dead end like usual I'd stick with AMD. Just make sure to keep an eye on these technical requirements:

  • High-speed DDR5 support
  • PCIe 5.0 lanes for future storage
  • Enough thermal headroom for those high-core renders Also dont forget to pair it with something like the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB NVMe SSD because 4k files will choke a slower drive way before the CPU starts to sweat. Its gonna be a killer build man!

> budget around 400 or 500 bucks ^ This. Also, be careful with intel sockets. Summary: AM5 is the longevity winner. Tbh, I would suggest the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X 16-core 4.5GHz if you want 16 cores cheap.

> i want a socket that isnt going to be dead in a year I always hit Micro Center for my builds. Just go with AMD since the socket longevity really saved me cash on my last editing rig upgrade.
