I know its like way ahead of time since its only 2024 right now but I am trying to plan for 2026 because thats when I move to Chicago for a new job and I heard the winters there are basically a nightmare. Im coming from Florida so I literally own zero warm clothes like not even a light jacket. Im so confused how people actually find those crazy 70% off deals you see on the news? My logic was maybe I should start bookmarking sites now but then I realized I dont even know which sites are actually good for Black Friday specifically... like is it just Amazon or do places like Nordstrom or Columbia do better ones?

Im really sorry if this is a dumb question but do the sales start at midnight on Friday or do they happen all week long? My budget is like $300 total for a whole winter outfit including a heavy coat and boots so I really need to maximize every penny. I keep seeing people talk about early access and doorbusters and it just makes my head spin honestly. Is there like a specific trick to getting the best price online before things sell out? I was thinking about just checking the big stores but maybe there are secret sites? Just trying to figure out if I should be looking at specific brands or just general department stores for that 2026 season...

I have spent years testing gear for extreme cold and unfortunately, many Black Friday doorbusters at big retailers are quite disappointing. They often promote low-quality polyester fill that fails once the temperature drops below freezing. If you want to survive Chicago on a $300 budget, you need to ignore the flashy 70% off signs and focus on technical specifications.

  • Prioritize a coat with at least 600-fill down or a thermal lining rather than just bulk.
  • Source boots from brands that provide specific temperature ratings, as generic fashion boots wont cut it. For your budget, these alternatives offer better technical value during sales:
  • Marmot Guides Down Hoody 700-Fill Power
  • Kamik NationPlus Winter Boots -40F Rating Basically, dont get distracted by the big department stores. Their gear often isnt as good as expected for actual sub-zero wind chills and youll likely end up disappointed by the quality...

Just seeing this now but honestly, be careful with those cheap doorbusters at big box stores. I would suggest keeping an eye on Lands End Expedition Down Winter Parka during their early sales. They usually hit 50 percent off before Friday even starts. Also, make sure to grab Kamik NationPlus Winter Boots because they're way cheaper than big brands but actually rated for sub-zero temps. Dont wait for midnight or everything sells out.

Stick to established outdoor brands because cheap stuff wont survive a Chicago winter. REI and Columbia are usually the safest bets for reliable gear. The sales usually kick off the week of Thanksgiving.

  • Columbia Whirlibird IV Interchange Jacket
  • Sorel Caribou Waterproof Winter Boots Those two will basically eat your $300 budget even with the 25% discounts, but they are decent options for staying safe.

@Reply #3 - good point! Honestly tho, I have been so disappointed with how Black Friday has changed over the years. It is unfortunately becoming a total race to the bottom when it comes to quality. If you are planning for that 2026 move, here are a few things to watch out for so you dont waste your budget:

  • Watch out for the Made for Outlet trap. A lot of brands sell lower quality versions of their gear during holiday sales that just wont hold up in Chicago wind.
  • Dont trust those massive 70 percent off signs at the big box stores. They usually mark stuff up right before the sale so the discount looks bigger than it is.
  • Skip the generic heavy coats from fashion retailers. If it isnt specifically rated for wind and moisture, you are gonna be miserable. Its kinda frustrating that you have to do so much homework now just to not get ripped off. That 300 dollar budget is gonna be tight if you buy the wrong stuff first...
