I have been trying to plan ahead for my nephew's birthday next year and I am already feeling pretty overwhelmed by the whole thing. He is turning ten in December 2026 and he really wants a gaming console but I have absolutely no clue what I am doing. I have never owned a game system in my life and when I look at the ads I just see a bunch of numbers and letters that dont mean anything to me. I have managed to save up about 400 dollars which I think is a lot but maybe it isnt? I dont know. I was thinking about waiting for the Black Friday sales in 2026 to see if I could get more for my money because I want to get him some games too not just the box itself. My sister says he likes Mario but then I saw a box for a PlayStation and it didnt have Mario on it so I guess they are different? It is all very confusing.

I live in a small town so I usually just go to the local Walmart but I keep seeing people online talking about Best Buy or Amazon having better bundles. I am worried if I buy it online it might get stolen from my porch or be the wrong version. I heard some versions are for discs and some are just for the internet? There are a few things I am really confused about:

  • how do I know if the games work on the machine
  • are the bundles actually a good price or just a trick
  • do I need to pay for a subscription to use it

I just want to make sure I am looking at the right stores when the time comes. I know 2026 is still a bit away but I like to have a plan because I am so bad at tech stuff. I am really sorry if this is a dumb question to ask here I just dont want to mess this up for him since he has been asking for a long time. Does anyone know which stores usually have the most reliable deals for gaming stuff or which ones I should keep an eye on when the 2026 sales start?

Just reading through... be careful with those Walmart doorbusters because sometimes they just bundle older games that nobody actually wants. I remember one year I stood in line for ages for a console bundle only to realize the free game was just a digital code for a game my nephew didnt even like. Total buzzkill. Before you jump in though, does he usually play on the living room TV or would he prefer playing in the car or his room? That really changes which model you should hunt for. Since you're worried about porch pirates, I would suggest checking Best Buy. You can order online during the sale and do store pickup so nobody snatches it off your porch.

  • Look for a Nintendo Switch OLED Model with White Joy-Con bundle.
  • Grab a SanDisk 256GB microSDXC UHS-I Card for Nintendo Switch because the storage fills up fast.
  • Watch for a Nintendo Mario Kart 8 Deluxe bundle since they usually toss the game in for free around November. Make sure you check the box for physical cartridges so you can buy used games later to save cash.

Just caught this thread... honestly keeping track of all the versions is a nightmare. I remember grabbing a deal once only to realize it didn't have a disc drive and I couldn't use physical games. I felt so dumb lol. Basically, if you see Digital in the name like the Sony PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition, it means no discs. Everything is downloaded. If you're worried about porch pirates, use Best Buy and select store pickup instead of shipping. I do that for every big purchase. By 2026, 400 dollars might get you more, but a disc console like the Sony PlayStation 5 Slim Disc Console usually stays closer to 500 dollars. You could look at an Microsoft Xbox Series S 1TB Carbon Black instead. It doesn't have Mario, but an Xbox Game Pass subscription gives him hundreds of games to play immediately without you buying them individually.

  • Mario is strictly Nintendo hardware, so snag a Nintendo Switch OLED Model 64GB.
  • In my experience, Target usually beats Walmart with better gift card bundles for games, tbh.
