Building on the earlier suggestion, be careful with cotton. It wont dry and youll freeze. Try technical fabrics:

  • Decathlon Kalenji Warm Running Tights
  • Nike Dri-FIT Element Half-Zip Top Check the outlets.

  • look at Sierra or Steep and Cheap!
  • i scored Brooks Notch Thermal Hoodie super cheap last Cyber Monday.
  • saved me during Maine winters, totally amazing for sticking to a budget!

Maine in winter is a different beast entirely. Ngl $150 is a really tight budget for a full winter kit, especially since you need technical fabrics to not literally freeze. I would suggest being extremely careful with what you pick up during the sales because the big brands often use Cyber Monday to clear out lower-spec inventory that isnt actually rated for sub-zero temps. Here are a few technical things I would look out for:

  • Avoid anything with cotton. It absorbs sweat, loses its loft, and will give you a chill the second you slow down. Look for synthetic polyester or elastane blends.
  • Check the GSM (grams per square meter) if the site lists it. You want heavier weights for Maine winters.
  • Be wary of factory store or outlet specific lines. They look like the main gear but usually have thinner insulation and worse windproofing.
  • Look for flatlock seams. Since youll be layering, standard seams will chafe like crazy once you start sweating under three layers.
  • Make sure any outer layer has a dedicated wind-blocking membrane. Nike and Under Armour usually have decent site-wide discounts like 30 percent off, but honestly, you might want to consider checking specialized outdoor retailers too. Big brands have cold gear that is fine for 40 degrees, but Maine is gonna require their top-tier thermal tech which rarely goes on deep discount. Just watch those specs closely... dont just buy it because it has a logo and says warm.
